What can I do to help prevent breast cancer?

According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, exceeded only by lung cancer. About 1 in 7 women will develop breast cancer over a lifetime of 90 years. All women are at risk for breast cancer. Are among the ways to reduce risks:

  1.     Maintain a healthy weight. The risk of developing breast cancer after menopause is higher in women who are overweight or obese.
  2.     Year. The American Cancer Society recommends engaging in 45-60 minutes of exercise five days a week or more.
  3.     Limit alcohol consumption. Alcohol, the liver's ability, the blood levels of the hormone estrogen, which can increase the risk control. Nurses' Health Study at Harvard University, with many others, has shown that consumption of more than one alcoholic drink per day may increase the risk for breast cancer than 20-25 percent increase.
  4.     Limitation of exposure to estrogen. Estrogen stimulates the growth of breast cells, so exposure to estrogen for longer periods without interruption, may increase the risk for breast cancer.
  5.     Limit the use of oral contraceptives. The recent use may slightly increase a woman's risk for breast cancer.
  6.     Eating fruits and vegetables. Broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, spinach, carrots, tomatoes, cauliflower, cherries and berries are all fighting breast cancer.
  7.     Avoid high glycemic carbohydrates. Eating foods with low glycemic index averages and avoid white rice, white potatoes, sugar and products because these foods hormonal changes that trigger cell growth can be encouraged in breast tissue. Eat whole grains and legumes.
  8.     Stop smoking. Smoking is associated with an increased risk of breast cancer and the risk of other cancers.
  9.     Reduce stress and anxiety. There is no evidence that stress and anxiety can increase the risk of breast cancer, but some research suggests that to maintain the practice of yoga, prayer and meditation can stimulate the immune system to stress.
  10.     Perform monthly breast self-exam, get routine screenings and work closely with your physician or health care professional. We can not control our sex, age, race, or family history of breast cancer, but early detection can save lives.
