Women of all ages can reduce their risk of breast cancer through regular exercise, the researchers said.
Previous studies have shown that regular exercise can protect against disease.
But now a study in the United States with more than 74,000 women, it's never too late to start.
Writing in the Journal of American Medical Association, she says, that women after menopause, the risk can be reduced through exercise.
Regular exercise
Dr. Anne McTiernan and colleagues at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, their conclusions on a survey of each of the women.
They all asked how often they exercised, and if they are exercised when they were young.
The researchers found that women who exercised regularly their risk of developing breast cancer decreased by 20%.
Moderate exercise such as walking, cycling or swimming, five times per week had the greatest impact.
They found that physical activity reduces the risk for women who are more likely to develop the disease.
This includes people with a family history of breast cancer and hormone replacement therapy.
The study suggests that the benefit is greater in women with low or normal weight, and even those who are slightly overweight, was.
They found that regular exercise does not help women who are overweight or obese.
However, Dr. McTiernan asked the women to begin exercising.
"This result should not keep certainly an exercise for overweight women," she said.
"Start Training There are many benefits for women of any weight, how to reduce their risk of heart disease and diabetes.
"But in terms of risk of breast cancer, overweight women are the greatest benefits when they start their weight forever."
Body fat
She suggested that exercise reduces the risk of breast cancer by reducing the fat in the body.
"We believe that the exercise runs the risk of cancer by reducing body fat, which lowers the levels of circulating cancer by reducing hormones.
"Even if a woman exercising when they eat a lot of fat is still high, they are not the same protection against cancer than women with less body fat."
She said that women should aim to do moderate exercise 30 minutes a day, five days a week. Women should not regularly play sports slowly begin to increase physical activity over time.
Breast Cancer Care, welcomed the study. Said Anna Wood, policy analyst: "Old age is a risk factor for breast cancer, and this research shows that moderate exercise such as walking or swimming is doing something older women may increase the risk of breast cancer.
"Women often want to know what to do about her risk for breast cancer research and this simple change in lifestyle and positive environment to reduce."
