Immunologist Dr. Vincent Tuohy tried to kill breast cancer before it can be found on a mammogram.
"I thought the best thing to do is try to prevent cancer to begin to appear," said Tuohy.
At the Cleveland Clinic Lerner Research Institute, Tuohy and his team have developed a first of its kind that the vaccine can be expected to protect women against breast cancer. The vaccine is ultimately aimed at women 40 and older, and those at high risk of disease. Most previous attempts, viruses or vaccines against cancer have tumors that have already been developed in particular, this approach to attack the cancer before it can develop.
"We sought a self-protein that is expressed in most breast cancers, but not in normal breast tissue," says Tuohy.
The vaccine is effective in animals. Start human trials this year, focusing primarily on women over 40 with a high risk of breast cancer.
"There is a major failure of our health care system, I think if the show, they all say." Yes, you're right, "but we do not," said Tuohy.
Research conducted in the United States, Europe and Singapore.
